Participation:
------------

78 teams participate in the competition:
- all 20 Serie A teams;
- all 22 Serie B teams;
- 27 Lega Pro teams:
- the 3 teams relegated from last season's Serie B;
- the 24 best placed teams from last season's Lega Pro season, that aren't promoted and aren't excluded from Lega Pro for other reasons;
- 9 Serie D teams, chosen by the LND (usually the 2nd placed team in each of the 9 Serie D groups).

The 22 Serie B teams enter the competition directly at the 2nd Round.
The 8 teams, placed 1st-8th in last season's Serie A, enter the competition directly at the 8th Finals.
The other 12 Serie A teams enter the competition directly at the 3rd Round.


Knockout stage:
------------

1st Round:
36 teams are drawn into 18 pairs.
Teams are seeded into 2 pots as follows:
Pot 1: the 18 teams with better last season's ranking;
Pot 2: the other 18 teams.
Teams from Pot 1 are drawn against teams from Pot 2.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Pot 1 teams are hosts.

2nd Round:
18 teams from the 1st Round and the 22 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 20 pairs.
Teams are seeded into 2 pots as follows:
Pot 1: the 20 teams with better last season's ranking;
Pot 2: the other 20 teams.
Teams from Pot 1 are drawn against teams from Pot 2.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Pot 1 teams are hosts.

3rd Round:
20 teams from the 2nd Round and the 12 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 16 pairs.
Teams are seeded into 2 pots as follows:
Pot 1: the 12 teams that enter the competition at this stage;
Pot 2: the other 20 teams.
Teams from pot 1 are drawn against teams from pot 2 until all teams from pot 1 are drawn.
The remaining Pot 2 teams are drawn against each other.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Pot 1 teams are hosts. In ties involving teams from Pot 2 hosting is determined by the draw.

4th Round:
16 teams from the 3rd Round are drawn into 8 pairs.
Teams are seeded into 2 pots as follows:
Pot 1: the 8 winners from the 3rd Round pairs, involving the four highest ranked seeds.
Pot 2: the other 8 teams.
Teams from pot 1 are drawn against teams from pot 2 until all teams from pot 1 are drawn.
The remaining teams from pot 2 are drawn against each other.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Pot 1 teams are hosts.

8th Finals:
8 teams from the 4th Round and the 8 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 8 pairs.
Teams are seeded into 2 pots as follows:
Pot 1: the 8 teams that enter the competition at this stage;
Pot 2: the other 8 teams.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Pot 1 teams are hosts.

Quarter-finals:
8 teams are drawn into 4 pairs.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Hosting is determined by the draw.

Semi-finals:
4 teams are drawn into 2 pairs.
Winners are decided over two legs.
Hosting is determined by the draw.

Tie-breakers for the Semi-finals knockout matches:
1. aggregate score from the two legs, 2. away goals, 3. extra time, 4. penalties.

Final:
The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming Coppa Italia winner.
Winner is decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
The match is played at a neutral venue.

Qualification for UEFA competitions:
winner: UEFA Europa League
* - if the Coppa Italia winner qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, then no team from the Cup qualifies. The best placed 2015/2016 Serie A team, not otherwise qualified for the UEFA Europa League, earns the spot instead.
