24 teams qualify for the competition:

- France (as hosts);

- 23 teams from the 2016 France EC Qualification.





Group stage:

Format:

All matches from the Group stage and Final Stages take place in France.

24 teams are drawn into 6 groups of 4 teams each (Group A-F).

Each team plays the others from its own group once - for a total of 3 games each, over 3 game weeks.



Scoring points:

3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.



Table order:

1. points won; 2. points in head-to-head matches; 3. goal difference in hth matches; 4. goals scored in hth matches; 5. total goal difference; 6. total goals scored; 7.* penalties; 8. fairplay ranking; 9. UEFA ranking.

* - only in case of a tie between exactly two teams which play each other in the final round of a mini-tournament.

Tie-breakers for determining the 3rd placed teams ranking:

Format:

16 teams from Group stage contest the 2016 France European Championship winner in a knockout format.



8th Finals:

Teams are paired according to their Group stage standings:

2nd in Group A vs 2nd in Group C (match 1);

1st in Group D vs 3rd in Group B/E/F (match 2);

1st in Group B vs 3rd in Group A/C/D (match 3);

1st in Group F vs 2nd in Group E (match 4);

1st in Group C vs 3rd in Group A/B/F (match 5);

1st in Group E vs 2nd in Group D (match 6);

1st in Group A vs 3rd in Group C/D/E (match 7);

2nd in Group B vs 2nd in Group F (match 8).

The distribution of 3rd placed teams among the pairs depends on which 3rd placed teams qualify in order to avoid a pair of two teams from the same group:

- 3rd in Group A: in match 5 (if both 3rd teams from Group C and D also qualify); otherwise in match 3;

- 3rd in Group B: in match 2 (if the other qualified 3rd teams are from Groups A, C and D); otherwise in match 5;

- 3rd in Group C: in match 3 (if the other qualified 3rd teams are from Groups B, E and F); otherwise in match 7;

- 3rd in Group D: in match 7 (if the 3rd team from Group A qualifies, and the 3rd team in Group C does not qualify); otherwise in match 3;

- 3rd in Group E: in match 7 (if both 3rd teams from Group B and F also qualify); otherwise in match 2;

- 3rd in Group F: in match 5 (if the 3rd team from Group E qualifies, and the 3rd team in Group B does not qualify); otherwise in match 2.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.



Quarter-finals:

Teams are paired as follows:

winner match 1 vs winner match 2 (match A);

winner match 3 vs winner match 4 (match B);

winner match 5 vs winner match 6 (match C);

winner match 7 vs winner match 8 (match D).

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.



Semi-finals:

Teams are paired as follows:

winner match A vs winner match B;

winner match C vs winner match D.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.



Final:

The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming 2015 France European Championship winner.

Qualification for FIFA competitions:

winner: 2017 Russia Confederations Cup

* - if a team that has already qualified for the 2017 Russia Confederations Cup (Russia or Germany) win the 2016 France European Championship, then the losing finalist qualifies instead. If both finalists have qualified, one of the two losing semi-finalists qualifies, determined by draw.
